Simply Piano Alternative Applications and the Polyphony App You Can Practice With

Simpy Piano is a piano learning application developed by JoyTunes. You can use the app by connecting it to any piano or keyboard. You can learn to play the piano in practice and improve yourself by reading notes.

Although Simply Piano is the most well-known of these types of applications, we have listed the alternatives that are better developed and stand out in different fields. Whatever application you use theoretically, make sure to use the Polyphony App for practice. Remember that it is practical work, not theory, that leads you to success. Theory is essential for the beginning and the foundation. But the more you practice, the faster you will climb the ladder of success.

If you are curious about Polyphony, you can get detailed information here.

Simply Piano

PROS:

Works with any piano or keyboard - No need for midi cables or digital piano. Since the app listens to sheet music, any piano or keyboard will work just fine, including acoustic pianos.

Teaches music reading right away – The first few courses teach you the basics of reading music, and the learning format allows you to continue accessing these skills.

It lets you do it right – Courses won't let you progress until you've played a chapter correctly. While some students may find this annoying, this feature is a plus in my books because it sets you up to a standard like an IRL piano teacher would.

Multiple profiles in one account – Up to five family members or friends can use the same account and log in on different devices. This is great for holding each other accountable and learning as a family!

Works without an internet connection - While internet is required to download lessons and create profiles, you can also do lessons without internet, which is great for those with poor Wi-Fi connections.

Each course begins with a summary - “Reminder” lessons solidify previous concepts and help you build on what you've already learned. This is especially good for reading music; the app lets you read the notes multiple times in different patterns, which is what it takes.

CONS:

Doesn't let you skip ahead – While students are free to choose courses at any level, the lessons don't let you skip sections where you don't need to practice. This means it's difficult to isolate concepts without doing the entire course, which can be frustrating for students who know what they want to learn.

It's not very customizable – compared to other methods like Piano Marvel, this app doesn't have much options for customization. For example, practice mode lets you choose between several tempos, but doesn't set your own and usually doesn't let you separate your hands.

It moves slowly – Simply Piano recommends giving you two years to complete the entire program. While many students will be able to go faster, following this program means they won't be able to learn key signatures and 16th notes until the end of the second year - it's too late for such basic concepts.

Does not teach advanced music reading or theory – The course leaves out many of the symbols and terms required for further music reading outside of the course. Additionally, Simply Piano is very light on theory compared to other online piano courses and traditional methods.

Flowkey

Flowkey is a multiplatform piano learning app for learning and adding pieces to your repertoire. It is the perfect tool for beginners, featuring songs from various categories such as classical, pop, movie and TV favorites, jazz, Christmas, rock, as well as moods with happy and melancholic tracks.

PROS:

Fun way to learn new songs while tracking your progress and keeping you motivated.

Access to a wide variety of songs.

Well-designed and intuitive user interface.

Choose different speeds to learn a song, including Slow Mode or Fast Mode.

Choose a passage to loop to learn more difficult chords or phrases.

Apply one hand at a time.

As you learn the song in real time, the video of someone playing the song and the notes at the bottom appear on the screen.

More affordable than a piano teacher.

Portable song collection in your app's library.

CONS:

It is better to consult a piano teacher about informative videos and piano techniques.

The arrangements are not in absolute tempo - the performer plays musically with a rubato feel in some sentences of the pieces, so it can be difficult for beginners to follow.

Doesn't teach you composition.

Connection via your device's microphone does not play well (use of USB/Bluetooth MIDI connection is recommended when playing in “Standby Mode”).

No metronome built into the app.

Skoove

Skoove is a music app that helps you learn the piano by using videos that show you people playing the song (with corresponding sheet music). You can also contact Skoove teachers to help you ensure that you are learning correctly.

PROS:

Offers free introductory courses.

Convenience and go at your own pace.

You can use your digital piano or acoustic piano for lessons.

Teaches you the basics of reading music.

Currently available in 6 different languages.

Easy to use interface.

CONS:

Inability to view all sheet music – You can only see one line of music at a time, as seen below. When learning new songs, you have to jump from line to line.

All songs are arrangement – No original tracks are displayed with Skoove. All of the songs are arranged to highlight the lessons you usually learn through their lessons.

Leaves out important music theory concepts – However, this course focuses on beginners, so I wouldn't argue that you should necessarily learn advanced concepts before understanding the basic theory.

You might want to supplement Skoove with a scales book - Libras are some of my favorite exercises to help develop finger dexterity and strengthen your fingers. Here are my suggestions for applying scales.

You cannot set the courses as you wish – Not all courses can be set. You can't slow down songs and increase your speed until you learn them.

Each course begins with a summary - “Reminder” lessons solidify previous concepts and help you build on what you've already learned. This is especially good for reading music; the app lets you read the notes multiple times in different patterns, which is what it takes.
